This archive contains the final English version of Alice v2.4. A number of
bug fixes in the final version pertain to the BlueWave setup and to T2
(1.0.1 is included in the archive). T2 now works correctly on the SE/30,
imports messages automatically, and supports message bases of up to 8MB.
Integration with the freeware mailer "Charon" and the decompression utility
"ZipIt" has been greatly simplified for Macintosh FidoNet point setups.

Alice can function either as an offline .QWK, .XRS, or BlueWave FidoNet
mail reader, or Alice may be combined with Charon and ZipIt to form a
seamless FidoNet point setup for the Macintosh platform. Alice is shareware
- $15.

Attached please find a bin-hexed StuffIt archive that contains new Apple Modem
Tool resources for adding modems to the Apple Modem Tool.  I am the author of
these resources. I have developed them after extensive testing with the
respective modems.  These resources may be freely distributed.

AMT-PPI-14400FXSA is a modem resource that can be used in conjunction with
the Apple Modem Tool v1.5 to add the Practical Peripherals 14400FXSA modem to
the tool's list of choices available.  (Note to archivists: you may want to
delete the earlier version I posted some months ago.)

AMT-AT&T-Dataport is a modem resource that can be used in conjunction with
the Apple Modem Tool v1.5 to add the AT&T Dataport modem to the tool's list
of choices available.

You add these resources by using the Apple Modem Tool itself. In the pop-up
menu of modem choices, you select "Modify this menu". In the dialog box that
follows, select the "Import"  button. Point the file open dialog box at
either of these resources, and you will add four flavors of modem settings
for the selected modem.  The resources can be removed in a similar fashion.

The files include custom finder icons.

These files also contain a custom modem cable PICT resource, which makes a
minor correction to the one contained in the Apple Modem Tool itself.

These files may be freely distributed as long as they remain intact.

Changes since last distribution:

  --added "STR" resource to explain function when double- clicking on file in
Finder

The enclosed file is a bin-hexed/stuffit archive. I am the
author of this document, which I call AMT-PPI-14400FXSA.

AMT-PPI-14400FXSA is a document that can be used in conjunction
with the Apple Modem Tool v1.5 to add the Practical Peripherals
14400FXSA modem to the tool's list of choices available.

You add these resources by using the Apple Modem Tool itself.

other things on America Online while you are downloading or uploading

America Online Download Manager Assistant (AOL DM Assist) 1.0b6

<Even though this utility is only useful to members of America Online,
 I figured I'd go ahead and upload it on the Internet as well (so that
 people can get it a bit easier, and with less cost :). It can be found
 on AOL in the Mac Utilities forum, in the Applications 2 library (new
 versions will be uploaded to AOL MUT quite in advance of appearing on
 the Internet, so check MUT New Files for them).>

This is AOL DM Assist, an unofficial External Tool for use with the America
Online 2.0 software for the Mac. AOL DM Assist is a utility which provides
many features lacking in the Download Manager. It does not replace DM, it
enhances it & complements it. Many of these features are ones that I hope
to see AOL add to the DM in later releases of the File Transfer Tool. Until
then, I've created this. It does not modify, in any way, the America Online
program or any of its Tools, nor does it affect the operation of the AOL
software. The only AOL-related file which this program affects is the
Mailbox files (as selected by the user).

Primarily, AOL DM Assist allows you to manipulate the files in your
Download Manager queues. You can move files up or down in the list to
change the order that they are downloaded. You can easily delete multiple
entries (DM can only delete one entry at a time--try clearing 100 entries
from your Completed Downloads queue that way ;). I also added a "Holding
Queue", so that you can hide entries from the DM to prevent them from being
transferred during a FlashSession while still retaining the file info for
later transfer. You can also reset any file to an untransferred state. Note
that all this must be done while offline and while not running the AOL
software. The AOL DM Assist package also contains ResEdit TMPL's for
editing the file queue resources.

America Online Download Manager Assistant is free (all I ask is that you
send me email with your comments--positive and/or negative--on my little
utility, or suggestions for features that you would like to see in AOL's
Download Manager), though you may send cash if you feel it has saved you
from headaches that the DM alone would have caused--I promise I won't stop
you <grin>.

I am considering writing a similar "External Tool" for improving the mail
interface of AOL--better address lists, multiple "folders" for filing
incoming messages based on subject/source/etc., easier message deletion,
and so forth. This presumes that AOL does not make such improvements
themselves in the near future. If there is something that you would like to
see as far as improvements to AOL's mail or download interface, let me know
and I'll consider them.

Here is an AppleLink CCL for using the Apple Modem Tool (version 1.1 or
greater).  It works around some issues with the Comm Toolbox implementation in
AppleLink 6.1.  It should be more robust than an earlier CCL posted a couple of
months ago.  Many thanks go to the AOS group for identifying CTB scripting
workarounds in CCL.

It is is released “as is” — it has no known software limitations and is not a
supported product of Apple Computer.

(Note: Requires the Communications Toolbox and the Apple Modem Tool 1.1 or
greater (1.1.1 preferred), which are not included in this package.)

Fixes for demo version ATM 0.5:

1.  Now creates its own Network Data folder if its not found, this means you
    can run ATM from anywhere on your disk.  The program will not bomb if
    this folder is not found.

2.  The Application memory size has been pre-set to 750k, this allows ATM to
    run under Multifinder.

3.  The "Echo" function has been improved.  Echo as an implementation under
    DDP does not seem to work in the prescribed manner in "Inside Mac"
    Vols II and V, and also Inside Appletalk.  I have developed an algorhthym
    that takes care of about 99% of ECHO, some errors still occur but very few.

ATM 0.4

    This little program was developed as an exercise, just like a lot of
other peoples I guess.  In the writting of this program I learn't that there
are a few untruths or things just plain left unsaid.  For instance you would
think that all Macs and LaserWriters would have AEP (AppleTalk Echo Protocol)
built in, this seems not to be the case.

   When you activate this program and after the Mac has finished making its
report of the network, you can double click on the desired node in the list
and 100 packets are sent to that node using AEP. AEP is a possible test of
the line quality between nodes, this is not strictly true, ie. if a PC node
is buisy packets can be lost and therefore alter your interpretation
of the results.

    The display consists of Bridge data, Zone data, currently visible
entities, an AEP dissplay and two fake boxes.  There are also a couple of
fake menus, as you will see the interface kind of evolved in the writting.
Its a simple matter to remove the unwanted stuff.

    The program sorts all the NVE's (Network Visible Entities) Alphabetically
and by Node address, other information is provided along with these files,ie,
numbers of nodes,data and time etc and Zone plus Bridge data.  The program has
been of use at this site because there are well over 150 NVE's to deal with.

    I would have liked to implement a graphic load averager, but I get too
buisy these days to sit down and concentrate on it.    Anyway hope its of use

The following CCL scripts come from the Supra Technical Support BBS, and
are for use with various Supra Modems, under ARA 1.0. They extend the
ability to work in adverse conditions above that of the already on your
archive.

Enclosed are the CCL's Supra offers for use with our SupraFaxModem and
AppleTalk Remote Access 1.0.

These CCL's will work with following modems*:

* SupraFaxModem V.32bis
* SupraFaxModem V.32
* SupraFaxModem 144LC
* SupraFaxModem 144PB

* For SupraFaxModem Plus use the CCL provided with ARA.  For the SupraModem
2400 and SupraModem 2400 Plus use the Hayes 2400 CCL provided with ARA.

Desription of the various CCL's:

SupraFaxModem V.32bis
This is the standard CCL to be used with all the SupraFaxModems listed above

SFM V.32bis - S110=3
This CCL should be used by the initiator of a call when line quality
is poor.  It will have the modems connect at 4800 then upshift to the
highest speed that the line quality will permit (maximum 14,400)

SFM V.32bis - S110=0
This CCL can be used on the Client or Host end when line conditions are
very poor.It will limit carrier speeds to 9600 and below.

SFM V.32bis/9600 - S110=0
This CCL also allows carrier speeds up to 9600 but also sets the serial
port speed at 9600.  This should be used on those  Macs where high speed
serial communication is a problem

SFM V.32bis/9600/NHW - S110=0
This CCL is the same as above one but it disables hardware handshaking and
uses Xon/Xoff (software) flow control instead.

I have not sought permission to re-post these CCL's due to the distance
between me and Supra US, they were emailed by a third party. However since
they should only help existing Supra owners run their modems as initially
expected I don't forsee any objections on their part, especially since they
are freely available on their BBS.

SupraFaxModem Plus.

Changes in this release are:
Improved reporting of connection speeds with the SupraFaxModem 288 modem;
=46ixed blind dialing problem that existed for some SupraFaxModem models;
=46ixed manual dialing problem in ARA 2.0.

This is a CCL for the AT&T Paradyne Comsphere 3810 modem. Actually it's a quick
hack from the Hayes Smartmodem 2400 but changed to allow access at upto
14.4kbaud. I had to write this quickly as we needed it for our Shiva LAN
Rover-E so I haven't used any of the modem's advanced features (but apparently
ARA does it's own data compression etc, so these may not be required). This CCL
has not been written by AT&T and hence it is not approved by them (but it still
works!).

Since AppleTalk Remote Access apparently does not support varying the speed
of the connection, on marginal lines it is sometimes necessary to connect at
a slower speed. Otherwise, a burst of noise can cause the modems to attempt
to retrain and hang up the ARA connection.

These scripts from Global Village allow connections at various slower baud
rates for the Teleport modems.

These two CCL scripts are used with AppleTalk Remote Access and the Global

allow the user to choose the maximum speed that they wish to communication at.
I wrote this because some of the phone lines I dial in from a pretty bad and
although the modems may eventually connect at 14.4 they soon lose they carrier
etc. and crash. It is much easier in this situation to simply try and connect
at a lower speed. Previously, I had hacked some CCL's and each one would
connect at a certain speed. However, this is tedious as it the appropriate
script has to be selected each time from the Remote Access Setup Control Panel.
Using this CCL I just choose the speed I want and that's it.

Note: The PowerPort and Teleport modems have a very different command set and
functions. When using either 12000 baud or 7200 baud with the Teleport that is
the only speed at which you can communicate. ie If you try to connect to a
modem that does not support these rates then the connection will fail. However,
with the PowerPort series communication can take place at a lower rate if 12000
or 7200 is not supported.

How It Works:

The ARA CCL language supports a command 'ASK'. This allows the user to type in
a text string. This string can then be printed, either to the screen or to the
modem. (As far as I know I can't do any string comparisons with it, or access
it in any other way!! If any one knows any different please let me know.) This
string is then sent out to the modem which has had 'echo' enabled. The string
is then read back in from the modem and is then compared with 300,1200,.... to
select the appropriate speed via either modem 'AT' or ARA 'serrest' commands.

Please note that these scripts have no yet been approved by Global Village and
are supplied as is with no warrenty etc. However, they work for me and that's
all I was ever bothered about anyway.

Here is the latest version of ARA + (v 1.0.3) by Benjamin Herrenschmidt.
This is a very useful addition to Apple Remote Access I use everyday
because of the automount feature (though I also have QuickKeys).
It is also compatible with ARA 2.0.

ARA+ 1.0.3 is a US$ 20 (FF 100) shareware and Benjamin can be reached

ARA+ is a little application (it uses 120K of RAM) which displays a
status bar. This status bar contains the state of AppleTalk Remote
Access along with some way to control this state: if your are
connected to a remote host, you have a "Disconnect" button on the
right of the status bar, else you have a popUp of connection files.
This popUp if configurable.
The status bar has two position "small" and "large". "large" is the
default one and can be changed with the little switch on the left of
the window.
When in "small" position, if you are connected you have the connection
time and the little "D" button, if you are disconnected you have only
the popUp. In "large" you always have the popUp or the button with
full title AND the status message.

ARA+ adds many features to ARA: It knows some AppleEvents: you can
establish a connection and disconnect with AppleEvents. A little aete
resource allows you to use these AppleEvents with AppleScript. A future
version will implement more AppleEvents.
There is a "Smart disconnect" feature (enable by default) which will try
to unmount all the remote AppleShare volumes before disconnecting.
ARA+ can add volume mounting informations to connection files in order
to automount these volumes when a connection is established.

The 'Practical Peripherals 9600SA' script that is shipped with AppleTalk
Remote Access does not function consistently with the Practical Modem 9600SA.
This is normally experienced while using a Quadra X00 with the '040 cache on.
It appears that the modem command processor requires quiet time between the
"OK<cr><lf>" response from the modem and the receipt of the next command from
the ARA CCL interpreter.  This required quiet time seems to be on the order
of 5-10ms.

The following script meets this requirement in the simplest way - a "Pause 1"
is inserted in front of every "Write" command!  This inserts a 200ms delay
(Quadra 700, cache on) that allows the modem command processor to recycle for
the next command.  The disadvantage of this approach is that the CCL execution
times for dialing and hanging up are increased by about 1s.  The speed of the
ARA connection is unaffected since the CCL interpreter is only used for
initiating and terminating connections.

Surprise, surprise! We bought two ZyXEL U -1496E+ modems a week ago and found
out by accident that they support 19200bps! Thus, it was necessary to rewrite
the modem script for Apple Talk Remote Access to make it work with this new
generation of modems. Since this script might be of interest to many new users
of Zyxel modems for the Macintosh it would be a good idea to have it posted in
info-mac/comm! Thanks much.

This CCL script now supports the newest ROM version and 19200bps speed
(April1993) for which I didn+t get any written information although the modem
does support this feature. In general, the script supports 57600 baud from Mac
to Modem and back. The settings work with a pair of ZyXEL modems (at 19200bps!)
and with at least two other modems from different manufacturers on a Plus and
on  a Quadra 700 including callback, mixed pulse and touch tone dialing, etc.
Since some national telephone systems or switchboard telephone equipments don+t
give the anticipated dialtone, I have included an escape sequence to override
this necessity just in case (changes the script from X6 to X3). If there are
any problems please let me know. However, I cannot guarantee that this hack
will work for every ZyXEL modem. If it works for you, drop me a line, please.

and answering malfunctioned as well. So, here is a hacked version, which

and 16800 bps), callbacks and at least one non-ZyXEL call-in modem (an
Apple Express Modem).

I suggest you replace the archived copy with this one.

        The genesis of the Big Dummy's Guide was a few informal
conversations, which included Mitch Kapor of the Electronic Frontier
Foundation (EFF) and Steve Cisler or Apple Computer, Inc. In June of 1991.
With the support of Apple Computer, EFF hired a writer (Adam Gaffin) and
actually took on the project in September of 1991.
        The idea was to write a guide to the Internet for folks who hand
little or no experience with network communications. We intended to post
this Guide to "the 'net" in ASCII and HyperCard formats and to give it away
on disk, as well as have a print edition available for a nominal charge.
With the consolidation of our offices to Washington, DC, we were able to
put the Guide on a fast track. You're looking at the realization of our
dreams--version one of the Guide. At the time I'm writing this we're still
fishing around for a book publisher, so the hard-copy version has not yet
been printed. We're hoping to update this Guide on a regular basis, so
please feel free to send us your comments and corrections.

Do you have the need to connect to an IBM mainframe from home?  CTerm may be
the product you need.  It enables dial-up connections to IBM mainframes
through IBM (or compatible) protocol converters such as the 7171 or 3174
with the appropriate dial-up support.

All that is needed is a modem, the Communication Toolbox (or System 7, since
the CommToolbox is built-in), and a connection tool (such as Apple's
modem tool).

CTerm implements the same terminal emulation as IBM's FTTerm software, often
referred to as Async 3270 or IBM 3101 emulation (it is actually an "extended
subset" of the 3101 emulation).

Two other software packages exist for the Mac to perform this function; both
are commercial products which are fairly expensive.  CTerm is shareware.  If
you find it useful, a modest $20 registration fee is requested.

Here's an overview of CTerm's features:

*  Completely Mac-like (not some quick port)
*  Four-color support, including alternate background colors
*  Support for any fixed-width font in any point size
*  Pass-through printing from a host through an appropriately-
   configured protocol converter
*  Uses the extended keyboard to its maximum capabilities, while offering
   addition PF key options for those with a standard keyboard
*  MINIMAL IND$FILE file download support (this is not a published
   protocol; IBM won't disclose it, and I don't have the time to
   reverse-engineer it)

Of course, technical support is provided.  (But don't expect me to return
phone calls to unregistered users -- I'll talk to you, but not at my
expense.)

DialScript is a freeware serial communications program that provides
an easy to use scripting language that permits users to write scripts

DialScript runs, executes your script, and when login is complete
optionally automatically quits and launches your terminal emulator.

What is EasyTransfer?

EasyTransfer is a tool that allows users to exchange files between

This is a Tektronix 4010/VT100 emulator I found on AOL. It's a
little old and clunky, but apparently free. It was written by
Kenneth Chin-Purcell at the University of Minnesota in 1986.

For those who use Mathematica remotely (and may not have
been aware), tek graphics can be initialized by entering
<<Tek.m at the In[n]:= prompt.  This emulator will allow you
to view any Mathematica graphs, although you wil definitely
have to play around w/ settings on both ends.

I'm looking for a good VT340 or VT240 emulator (or a better
Tek 4010, for that matter), so if anyone is aware of such an
animal, please let me know. (Mathematica will send graphics
output to either kind).

FKEY moves all transfer windows, not just the active one. This permits you to
download many things, and execute the FKEY only once.

in Quebec City in Canada. The instructions were originally written in French

You gotta figure that one out yourself but is is really pretty "MAC LIKE"  :-) if you know how your modem is set. You will have to modify the number dialed if you going through a PBX or such.....

The system password is not used.

5PM is a multi-session communication application with full
Communications Toolbox support (i.e. connection, file transfer,
terminal tool). In conjunction with the set of unique Communications
Toolbox tools developed by ASC, described hereafter, 5PM is already
the most versatile terminal emulator available on the Macintosh
platform.

In addition, 5PM offers 5Talk, a HyperTalk like scripting language
with full support for the existing XCMD's and XFCN's.

5PM also allows the user to create palettes with graphic objects (i.e.
buttons, icons, etc...), and to attach scripts to sessions, palettes
and objects.

An interesting aspect is that the user can also attach scripts to any
key on the keyboard, thus allowing a very powerful way of remapping
keyboard functions.

With these scripting and objects creation capabilities, the user can
start developing visual macro-commands, and/or develop real front-ends
to host-applications by hiding the terminal window and presenting the
end-user a Macintosh interface to the host application.

Finally, 5PM includes Esmeralda, our own full implementation of the
ATS(tm) protocol provided until now only in MacWorkStation. Esmeralda
is much more flexible than MacWorkStation in three aspects :

     - it is build on top of the Communications Toolbox.
     - its functionality can be enhanced through the scripting engine.
     - it can be transparently started and quitted in the middle of
       a terminal session.

An important aspect in 5PM is that a user can freely and transparently
mix any of the working methods (i.e. terminal emulation, macro-commands,

This posting contains FreeTerm 2.0, a "dumb" glass-TTY emulator

Basic features and improvements over FreeTerm 1.8

-  FreeTerm 1.8 was limited to operation at speeds <= 2400 baud, which
   limited its usefulness to dial-up connections.  FreeTerm 2.0
   supports connections at 4800, 9600, 19200, and 57600 as well;  it
   uses XOFF/XON flow control to prevent buffer overruns at high line
   speeds [this feature can be disabled].

-  FreeTerm 2.0 supports the new extensions to the MacBinary file-
   encoding standard, as described in a document posted several
   weeks ago.

-  FreeTerm 2.0 is capable of unpacking any file that was packed by
   PackIt I, II, or III, or any other utility that produces a
   packed/compressed file in PackIt format.

-  FreeTerm 2.0's window can be resized (24*80 down to 4*15).

-  FreeTerm 2.0 remembers the most recent 20 full 24*80 screens;
   you can scroll back through the saved lines in the usual fashion.

-  You can send all 128 ASCII characters (and "break").

-  "Fast-track" XMODEM is supported, for those of you who use
   Compu$erve and have clean, error-free transmission lines.

Here is just something I did the other night.  I "colorized" the pictures
in the Hayes Modem Tool.  These are the pictures that show up while it is
dialing out or receiving a call.

I don't expect anyone to pass out from the briliance of these pictures, but
I just figured that if anyone else was annoyed at the black and white-ness
of the Hayes Modem Tool, then they could use this.

Actually, I'm not sure if anyone still uses this as much as I do.  I've
never been able to get the Apple Modem Tool to work just right with my Zoom
14.4 Fax.  Perhaps the HMT is outdated; alas though, I'm digressing.

To install:  double click the enclosed HMT Color resedit file.  While in
resedit, open your current Hayes Modem Tool and copy the resource from my
file to yours.  It seems to work without rebooting or anything, but
remember, some comm programs load the tool at startup, so if one is
running, you may need to quit and restart the application to notice any
changes.

If you feel I missed something, you think I have bad taste in colors, or
you have suggestions on what I better use my free time to do,  let me know.

Import Plus 2.5.2   :    21k+:Generic Import replacement
                        Import Plus is a replacement for the built-in
                        importation of the Generic Import file.  It is
                        non-modal so that users may continue to log on to all
                        nodes while it is importing messages.  You can also use
                        the computer with Hermes in the background.  It also
                        does not suffer from the bug that causes Hermes to lose
                        approximately 8-10% of all messages.   Shareware,

This here's Homer 0.93.3, a Mac IRC client.  IRC is the
Internet Relay Chat, a way to talk in a pretty much real-time
fashion to thousands of other people all around the world.
Homer tries to provide a friendly Mac-like interface to the
IRC jungle.  It features a funky-looking full-color interface
with all sorts of interesting buttons to push and things to
do.  You get to see little icon faces of other users, you can
have Homer speak to you (if you have Apple's Speech Manager
installed), and lots more.  Two versions of Homer are
included, one for people who use MacTCP-type connections to
the Internet, and one for people who dial into their unix
account using a modem.

This version of Homer requires a 68020 or better.  You can
FTP to zaphod.ee.pitt.edu if you need a version which runs on
a 68000-based Mac.

Iride is (or will be) an implementation of a MIME user agent on
the Apple Macintosh computer.
Its was developed as part of a project of the GNBTS - Gruppo Nazionale Bioingegneria sezione di Trieste, for the integration of multimedia mail with the hospital data storing facilities, in particular for the transfer of bioimages.

This is a far from a complete MIME implementation, but I think
it is quite usable.

To use it you need:
 - Macintosh with MacTCP 1.1 or better installed
 - 32 bit ColorQuickDraw if you want to use images
 - audio input device if you want to create audio messages
 - connection to a SMTP mail relay
 - connection to a POP3 server

MIME types supported:

text/plain      charset=US-ASCII only
text/richtext   (there is not a composing tool for richtext yet)

audio/basic
audio/X-macaudio generated sending a NOT sampled audio pasted in

image/GIF
image/X-macPICT  generated when color QuickDraw is missing only

KillEM FKEY

I wrote this small FKEY (563 bytes) to turn off the Express Modem
background software for Apple's Express Modem on the PowerBook
and PowerBook Duo line.  It looks for any currently running EM software,
and sends it a 'quit' event, or beeps if it can't find the EM
software.  This effectively turns off the modem and reduces demands
on the PowerBook's processor, extending the time between battery
charges.  You could use the Express Modem control panel, but I
think that takes too much time. :-)

This works fine for me on my PowerBook 180. I don't know if it
will work with the Duo software, but I think it should.  Let
me know if you have troubles or know something I don't.

Here is LeeMail 2.0.4, an minor upgrade from 2.0.3.  LeeMail is a
shareware Macintosh e-mail program that can use both the Simple Mail
Transfer Protocol (SMTP) and the Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) to
send and receive mail.  LeeMail requires MacTCP (or "TCP Connection for
Macintosh"), available from Apple.

Changes between version 2.0.3 and 2.0.4 include:

-     Rewrote the routines that copy text to a window for reading mail,
vastly increasing the speed.
-     Changed my e-mail address to "[e-mail]" in the
built-in alias for new users.
-     Moved POP checking so that it wont interfere with transmitting mail.
-     Changed the code to store additional users' POP passwords
"encrypted".
-     Increased the timeout for sending and receiving TCP data to 4 minutes
(instead of 20 seconds).
-     Made some small changes so that received mail windows correctly show
the mail Subject even if the From address doesnt contain "@".
-     Fixed a bug in the User Names dialog that didnt clear the password
box when clicking to a user who has no password.
-     Fixed a bug which caused a crash when sending mail to people with
long user ids (such as
"[e-mail]").
-     Fixed a small bug that caused mail list windows to be updated
incorrectly when you deleted a piece of mail you were reading.
-     Worked around some List Manager problems that caused trouble getting
to the last item in a mail list window.

LeeMail is shareware, $25.  Group packages, site licenses and source code
licenses are available.

This application converts a unix .mailrc-style text file into LeeMail
aliases and vice versa.  It's useful for transferring aliases from a unix
machine to LeeMail, and for distributing text files of aliases to groups of
people.

Version 1.0.1 of this utility fixes a bug which placed a null terminator
('\0') at the end the last address in an alias.  This caused the "X-Mailer"
line to be appended to the "To" line in e-mail headers when using LeeMail.

If you used version 1.0 of this utility, please update your aliases to
remove the problem described above by performing the following steps:
.     Convert your LeeMail aliases to a text file
.     Convert the text file back to the LeeMail aliases
This will correct the null-termination problem.

applications/tools to use the same serial port(s) simultaneously.
LineShare can detect the type of incoming calls and route the
call to the proper software. For fax modems, LineShare can employ the
"adaptive answering" feature supported with many modern modems, i.e.
the automatic detection of the incoming call type (fax or data).
Cooperating with VoiceMail applications, LineShare can provide Voice,
Fax and Data services on each and every line.

Generally, LineShare can be used with any modem and with any types of
incoming calls, if there is a method to detect the type of a call.
Those methods (algorithms) are programmed using the LineShare scripting
language. The scripting technology is used to support various modems
and communication applications. With LineShare scripts it is possible
to share the single line between more than two services: for example,
VoiceMail, Fax, ARA, Mailserver and BBS can share the same modem and
line.

LineShare can run only under System 7 and with server applications
that support CTB serial ports. The non-server applications (making only
outgoing calls, like terminal emulators) can be old-style ones.

LineShare is compatible with PortShare Pro: the line shared between
several local servers can be made available for non-server applications
on other computers. And more, server applications can run on remote
computers, too.

 Please note, that all scripts are called  Supra  Fax2&xxxx.  It  means
 that your fax software should work with your Supra modem employing Fax
 Class 2 commands (FaxSTF defaults to Class 1 for Supra).

 Also note that only firmware version "H" (or  later)  really  supports
 incoming call type detection. You  can  check  this  with  the  "ATI3"
 command - the modem answers with "V1.200-X", where "X" is the firmware
 version. If your modem has  an  older  firmware  version,  modem  will
 answer as FAX to all incoming calls. Ask Supra for free ROM upgrade  -

 The ARA/LineShare file is attached again - the 12000 bps was missed in
 the previous one.

allows multiple terminal windows to be opened to a host simultaneously
over a single serial connection.  The remote host computer must be a
UNIX(TM) system which has sockets support. Each terminal window may be
associated with a shell, login to a different host, or an individual
command.  New features since 1.20 include...

  The UNIX side has been ported to run on many new platforms including
  IRIX, AIX 3.2, SVR4, etc. (Not Solaris yet.)

  Support for a UNIX side .layersrc file to automatically startup and
  place windows when layers mode is started.

  Separate user settings and logfiles; each can be saved independently
  from the other; settings act as startup documents.

  Improved/reorganized keyboard support.

  Longer dial strings, mouse support under emacs, new Finder icons, etc.

To use MacLayers, you need to get both the Macintosh MacLayers client
application and the UNIX server programs.  They are packaged separately.
You will have to compile the latter.

receive an incoming call or calls. Unlike a few other programs with some
of the same features, MacPager is quite flexible, and will work on almost
any Mac platform and modem. As long as your Mac can properly talk to your
modem via the "AT" command set, this program will work for you.

MacPager (TM) will notify you at a beeper, regular telephone, carphone, or
deposit a message on an answering machine. If you have Caller ID, and a Caller
ID modem, it will also relay the incoming CID data to you. A Call Log stores
the incoming call data (as well the success or failure of remote notification)
for later retrieval, and will, at your discrection, make automatic backups
to your disk or hard disk.

The program a Binhxed file of a "self-extracting" Compact It 'capsule'
containing the MacPager (TM) 1.0 demo.

Feel free to use, copy, and distribute the encapsulated version at will.

MacVoice 1.0 DEMO is a fully functional copy of MacVoice 1.0 with the

     Incoming messages are limited to 5 seconds
     Messages are not time stamped when retrieved remotely

This version fixes a few bugs and adds support for ROM 6.10.  However,
if possible use ROM 6.00 or 6.01, as ROM 6.10 have not proved reliable
with our software.   Please be sure to read the README file.  An order
form is also included.

MacVoice 1.0 is a voice mail/answering machine software for Macintosh
and ZyXEL modems.  A ZyXEL modem, such as any one of the U-1496 Series,
is required.  A Macintosh with a 16Mhz or faster processor is required.
BETTER quality compression (ADPCM3) is only recommended on faster Macs
such as the IIci, IIfx, and higher.

MacVoice 1.0 supports multiple mail boxes, Distinctive Rings, playback
and recording thru the Macintosh hardware.

If you have 32 bit addressing problems, please let us know.  We have
made this version 32 bit clean for most Macs, however, if you discover

  I'm sending you the second version of MUBBS (1.1).

  MUBBS is a BBS program that run on all Macintoshes from the Mac Plus
onward (although I have heard people claim that it will run on a 512K
as well). It's highly configurable with an easy-to-use graphic
interface for all computer users! However, it's not a plug-and-play
typical Mac program. For those who were frustrated with the first
version (0.5), you'll be pleased to know that this version contains a
few bug fixes, some new utilities, a text editor, and more detailed
documentation.

  There is lots of support available for MUBBS, including many new
modules. Most of them are available on AOL or on the MUBBS support BBS
(The number is listed in the file). Best of all, MUBBS is FREEWARE! To
my knowledge, it is the only available free BBS program for the Mac.

  Please note that I AM NOT THE AUTHOR OF MUBBS, merely the person
posting the program.

  You need system 6.07 or later. While it does work under Multifinder
in the background, it is highly recommended that you have a seperate
computer for your BBS.

This folder contains a primitive security system for the MUBBS BBS system. It's merely a modified log in module that allows new users to sign up, but will time them out as soon as they reach the main menu. I am uploading this module with the permission of the MUBBS authors. I did the modification myself.

MUBBS is, to my knowledge, the only freeware BBS program available for the macintosh. Version 1.1 is available from mac.archive.umich, and the most recent version is available from the MUBBS Support BBS at [phone]. There's good support for MUBBS available, so I highly encourage anyone looking for a BBS program to check it out!.

NewsWatcher 1.3d8 is a modified version of Steve Falkenburg's "NewsWatcher"
Mac newsreader. It is based on Steve's version 1.0.2 and incorporates code
contributions by Ron Flax, Steve Klingsporn, John Norstad, Larry
Rosenstein, Jeroen Scheerder, and Neal Trautman.

Version 1.3d8 is a maintenance release to fix several errors and problems
reported by users in version 1.3d6. There are no new features.

NewsWatcher is free. It may not be resold for profit or included with
software which is sold for profit, but otherwise you should feel free to
use it and redistribute it.

Please note that this is a development version of the program (it's not
even beta yet!). That's what the "d" stands for in the version number
"1.3d8". Many features are not yet implemented. There are many known
problems and errors which have not yet been fixed. You can expect existing
features to change as the development process continues. If you require
perfection in your software, do not use this program!

On the other hand, you shouldn't let the previous paragraph frighten you.
Most people report that NewsWatcher is very robust, even in its current
unfinished state, and they find it useful and like the program.

The following documents are included along with the program. They are all
in Microsoft Word format.

User Doc: Basic instructions for using the program.

The following is a copy of the original note accompanying Obolus 1.0,

Obolus 1.0.2 is a mail program, designed to complement the Charon
mailer program, which was posted to sumex-aim recently.

Charon is designed to work with a "reader" program (eg, CounterPoint
or Alice), to allow a Mac user to operate as a Fido "point", calling
into a Fido hub to pick up and deliver mail and news, using the
Fido file transmission protocols.

Obolus is an adjunct to Charon, which allows Charon to properly
extract the outgoing mail and news from CounterPoint, including
the ability to compress outgoing mail.  Use of Obolus allows
Charon and CounterPoint to function as a fully integated "point"
package.

Both Obolus and Charon may be freely distributed and used.

Please note that any questions about Obolus should be directed to the
author's

uses the Program-to-Program Communications (PPC) manager to communicate over
AppleTalk networks.  PPC is the service used to implement program linking and

PPC is implemented on top of ADSP, so you may wonder why a PPC tool would be
useful since Apple already distributes an ADSP tool. PPC is more efficient when
connecting two ports on the same computer, and more specific in the way remote
ports are selected.  It is also possible to create a port that is not visible
across the network, which makes the port initialization much faster and could
provide better security for certain applications.  While ADSP may also have
these features, they are not accessible to the user in Apple's tool as far as I
can determine.

Phonebook Plus 1.0.1 allows you set the local area code, outside line
prefix, long distance prefix, and to force calls within the local area
code to be dialed as long distance.  Phonebook Plus 1.0.1 will also work
with private-labeled versions of FaxSTF such as the PSI PowerModems.

Phonebook Plus is freeware.  StuffIt 3.0 archive enclosed.

Version 1.0.1 fixes the installer to install in more private-labeled
versions of FaxSTF (DoveFax and creators FP01-FP09) and also fixes
a problem which could cause crashes under System 6.x.

POP2, POP3 and IMAP2 mail servers. You'll also need MacTCP (sold by Apple),
a connection to The Internet, and a mail server.

This supercedes version 2.0.8, which is presently on the archives.

POPmail 2.09 Features
---------------------
1.  Now able to support multiple settings files without needing multiple copies
of POPMail.

2.  If someone is unkind enough to send a partial binhex enclosure it will first
try to decode the enclosure.  If it finds that it has received all of the
message and can not finish decoding because it is incomplete, it does the
following.  It will fetch the message again treating it as a text message and
shows the entire message, - partial enclosure and all as message text.

3.  The following has become a standard feature.  When messages are deleted they
are moved into the trash.  They will be permanently deleted when the user quits
POPmail.  If you delete a message and want it back do the following.  Go into
the trash.  Drag the likely message out of the trash folder to some
location (Only because the finder will not let you open files in the
trash).
And then double-click on it.  POPMail will open it in a simple text window
document.  If it is the one you wish to keep move it back into the incoming
message directory.

4.  Check out the Search Files program.  It is Shareware so if you like it
please send the author his shareware fee.  :-)  You can use this little
application to search your message directory or a tree of directories such as a
folder which contains all of your archive folders.  And it will search down into
the directories contained within folders within folders.  It is quite fast
and works quite nicely in the background.
    It will show the file where it found a match for the search string and a
short line of context for it.  You can choose to see all hits in a file or just
the first hit.  Double-click on a line it displays and the message (archive or
incoming) will open in a simple text window.  Can be nice if you wish to send a
summary of several messages received or just read several messages while
composing a reply.

5.  Messages that are archived with this version will retain their correct
position.  So that they show up in the correct order when viewed by date which
is the normal ordering.  They will show up at the end of an archive when
archived.  But when the archive is re-opened later they sort out to their
correct position.

6.  An Enclosures directory has been added.  The directory if not specified will
be created automatically in the same directory as the POPmail application when a
user does their first fetch.


POPmail 2.09 Fixes
------------------
1.  Fixed memory leak in dns code.  Introduced in version 2.07.  Likely to go
unnoticed by most people.  But MailStop users would notice that they received a
'memory is low' dialog often.  This dns code would occasionally not timeout
requiring a kill of the program.  Timeouts are friendly and have returned.

2.  Fixed a bug in the Set Folder Dialog for System 7.x users.  Dialog did not
always retain the full info.  On next restart the user would get a 'Please set
the folder location' Dialog.

3.  Fixed a memory leak in the email groups.  Each time you edited the groups
you would lose an amount of memory equal to that used to store the groups.  This
has been there since the very first version of POPmail II.

4.  Fixed the Append Text option.  First, it no longer does any formatting of
the appended text.  It just reads it and sends it.  This also fixes the problem
of seeing the appended text scrolling by in the sender window.  Also fixes the
bomb that would occur if you closed the sender window before it finished
appending.

 This 4k program fills a very simple but important need: it dials  voice
numbers with your modem. It has no interface whatsoever, but rather reads
the number from the clipboard. On launch the program first tries to read
STR id 129 for a phone number. If that is blank, it wil try to read the
clipboard text. It will send ATD <text>, ; H0 to the modem (a generic
dial and hangup when done). Control will return immediatly to the
computer, even during dialing, unless you have set otherwise.
 I suggest putting the program in your Apple Menu for instant access!
 I'm sure that programs like this exist elsewhere, but I couldn't find
one so I threw this together myself. It works perfectly on my Mac SE/30,
and I can see no reason why it would not work on all Macintosh models.
 This program is public domain. If you do or even don't like it, please
drop me a note!

 Version 1.0.2 really closes the serial port (Well, it always did. But I
had to open the input side to close it!). It now also runs at 1200 bps.
and sends an initial AT<cr> to wake up the modem.
 Version 1.1 adds proper hangup-when-done (no silly wait 15 seconds bit)
and read a default prefix and phone number from the resource fork of the
file. It also includes an about balloon, bringing the size up from 2k to
4k. Bloat? You decide!
 Version 1.2 (8/31/93) didn't work, but if it did it would have the
option to wait for the modem to finish before quitting.
 Version 1.3 (1/21/94) does work. It changes a few features in ways worth
noting: (This also describes how the program works!)
  1) It sends AT<return>, then the string contained in STR id 128, then
STR id 129 or the clipboard if STR id 129 is blank, then ";H0"<return>.
This is slightly different than the old versions which sent ATD before
the STR id 128, etc.
  2) It now reads STR id 130 to check how long of a delay you want
between the time the command is sent to the modem and the program quits.
Putting in 0 will give the same behavior as before, where the program
quits as the phone is dialed. If you have fax software, or possibly a
powerbook, putting in a delay of 15 seconds or so will allow your modem
to dial before it is cut off. Your computer will appear to freeze for
however long you have specified; it really hasn't. I would still like to
have the option of waiting for the modem, but I haven't figured it out
(or had time to), so if someone can, please let me know!

Enclosed is a set of QuicKeys (now called "Shortcuts") that I use for
(mostly) automated ftp downloads from both info-mac and mac.archive.
Consider it a working prototype; modify as needed. See the enclosed text
file for details.

- QuicKeys 3.0 (need the conditional branch features)
- BBEdit (I use version 2.2.2)
          the shortcuts could be easily modified for another grep-able editor;
         (I guess Nisus would be ok, Adam :-)
- Fetch  (I use version 2.1.1)
- Mac hooked up to the Internet one way or another; I use MacPPP via modem
         (otherwise ftp won't work quite as well :-)
- Patience connecting to info-mac or mac.archive via ftp ;-)

I would enjoy getting e-mail from people who use this little hack. Please
let me know if you come up with useful improvements!

  This is a simple QWK-format offline mail reading package.
In order to use it, you also need a good text editor, and
a program to extract the contents of .ZIP files.  I recommend
BBEdit 2.2 and UnZIP 2.0, together with a patch that's floating
around out there to add word-wrapping capability to BBEdit.
Of course, you need a terminal program too.

  Instead of staying online, connected to a BBS for
many minutes, or sometimes even hours, reading th emessages, and
composing your replies to them, many BBSes now offer you
the option of downloading all your new messages as a
.QWK packet.  You can then decode and read the messages offline,
compose your replies, and upload your replies in the form
of a .REP packet.  Even if it takes you hours to read and
reply to all your messages, you only have to spend a
few minutes actually connected to the BBS.

  This package consists of a program called QWK, which will
convert the contents of a .QWK packet into a readible text
file, which you may read with any text editor, and another
program called REP, which will take a text file created by
you, containing all of your replies and new messages,
and convert it to a .REP packet that yu may upload to
the BBS to post your messages.

This is a program that a friend of mine wrote.  It will allow you to
read messages produced by "QWK" compatible message archiveing doors,
typically found on PC-based BBS's.  Using these doors, you can "pack"
all of your new messages into a single file, download that file, and
read it "offline" (while NOT connected to the BBS) at your convenience.
This saves in telephone charges and time on the phone, especially if you
are calling a long distance BBS.

This program is currently rather crude.  It will only "de-crypt" the
messages, and place them in an ASCII text file.  It is up to you to read
the messages (using a separate text editor or word processor), and it
is up to you to compose replies, by logging in to the BBS and typing
them yourself.  This is explained below.

This program is being written with little or no knowledge of the format
of QWK packets and ".REP" reply packets.  Therefore, any information you
can provide would be extremely helpful to the author.  It will enable
him to add more features to this program, including message reading
while within the program, automatic creation of reply ".REP" packets,

This program has been tested on a variety of Macs, running under various

TheNews V2.33 is a Usenet news reader for the Macintosh. With it, you
can read news articles from among the thousands of news groups
available, post new and followup articles, and mail followup
messages to the article posters.  The program requires a link to
your news server via MacTCP (Ethernet or LocalTalk), UUCP (using
UUPC 3.x and ToadNews), or the CommToolBox (over your modem).

The last major release of TheNews was V2.3.  That version included
the CommToolBox support, subject-threading, and multiple-article
saves and appends.  This version is primarily a bug-fix release,
with a few small enhancements thrown in for good measure:

* Added an option to flush the input queue (CTB version)
* Reposition the "Too many articles" dialog so that it doesn't
  cover up the "Fetching articles" dialog
* Make the ">" followup prefix changeable (via ResEdit)
* Don't line-break followup lines (ie, those beginning with ">"
* Close the article subject list window a little faster
* Added the clipboard to the "Windows" menu.

Bugs fixed
* Read next/previous/next-unread sometimes caused a problem where
  the header would change but the article text would not change
* Save/Append from the article subject list would never free up
  the memory used to perform the save/append
* "Beeping" on attempts to read past the beginning or end of the
  article list would confuse the menu bar when the sound was turned
  off
* Read next/previous/next-unread sometimes caused a crash (but not
  right away:-(
* CTB version gave up too quickly when used on a sluggish server
* A "read" failure while reading an article message would hang the
  program forever
* Mail/post followup to very short articles would cause crashes on
  some systems
* Posting an article created a "Date:" header line which included
  a mis-formed time (UUCP version only)
* Cutting from the Article Text window occasionally copied text from
  the wrong pane.
* Selecting the clipboard confused selection of other windows.
* Using <RETURN> or <ENTER> to select a group or article from an
  empty list resulted in a crash or confusing error message.

Timbuktu Pro Free Trial Version:

 - Works for up to seven days from the date of installation
 - Works on up to three Macintoshes

Timbuktu Pro FTV will not work with regular versions of Timbuktu Pro or
previous versions of Timbuktu.


Timbuktu Pro Free Trial Version requires:
Mac Plus or later
System 7.0 or later.
4 MB RAM
AppleTalk or TCP/IP network.  TCP/IP operation requires MacTCP 1.1.1 or
later, MacTCP 2.0 or later is strongly recommended.

The FTV is an image file in a stuffit archive. Once un-compressed, you have
two choices:

1. Get DiskCopy 4.2 (a freeware from Apple) or higher and load the image
file in DiskCopy. Then "Make a Copy" from the DiskCopy application. It will
ask for a disk and copy the content of the image file into the disk. Then
you can run the installer from that disk.

2. Get MountImage (a freeware from Apple) which is a control panel device.
Start the Macintosh with MountImage loaded. Open the MountImage CDEV. From
there, open the Timbuktu Pro image file. That you will see a disk icon
appear on the Finder desktop. Then you can run the installer from that
(fake) disk. Caveats when using MountImage apply.

Note: Except for the restrictions above, this is a fully functioning copy
of Timbuktu Pro.  This Installer will replace any existing version
of Timbuktu on your system, but it will NOT modify your TB2 Preferences
file.  To reinstall an older version of Timbuktu after using the Trial
Version of Timbuktu Pro:

1. Launch the Free Trial Version installer.
2. Select Customize.
3. Shift-select Timbuktu Pro Free Trial Version and/or Catalogs Extension
4. Hold down the option key, and click "Remove"
5. Reinstall your older version of Timbuktu.

This will preserve your existing system settings.

server").

What Is ToadNews?
-----------------

ToadNews provides Macintosh users running a UUCP package (such as Dave Platts
UUPC 3.0) with the ability to be leaf-node Usenet sites. A Usenet leaf-node
usually does not relay news other nodes, with the exception of the node that
feeds it news (called the newsfeed).

ToadNews itself takes newsbatches sent from the newsfeed and then unbatches
(and de-compresses if necessary) and puts the news into the appropriate
directory for retrieval by your favourite newsreader or text-editor.

Some features of ToadNews include:

• A news unbatcher that can manually unbatch newsbatches (via the File menu or
  by drag & dropping newsbatches onto the ToadNews program icon). The unbatcher
  can also be configured to look in a user-configurable folder for new
  newsbatches and automatically unbatch news.

• Handles both uncompressed & compressed newsbatches from newsfeeds running
  both B-News and C-News software. Decompression of newsbatches compressed
  with 12 to 16-bit compress is supported provided that ToadNews can allocate
  enough memory to perform the decompression. ToadNews will automatically
  determine which type of newsbatch is dealing with and perform the necessary
  operations to extract the Usenet news. Among the current formats supported
  are “#! rnews” (B-News uncompressed default format), “#! cunbatch”
  (B-News & INN compressed default format), and straight "compress"ed
  (C-News default format) batches.

• Flexible cross-posted articles handling. The user can configure ToadNews to
  save hard drive space by using aliases instead of duplicating articles, or
  can choose to ignore cross-posted articles totally.

• News articles are saved in Macintosh text-editor readable format, with all
  Usenet header information intact. In addition, you can tell ToadNews to
  generate message header information files which can be used by newsreaders
  to speed up the loading of newsgroup subject lists.

• A news expirer which removes old Usenet news from your hard drive. The
  expirer can be configured to run automatically after a user-configurable
  interval of time has expired (ie: once a day), and/or after the free hard
  disk space on your spool volume falls below a certain percentage of its
  total disk space (ie: run every time the free space on your hard disk falls
  below 25% of its capacity).

• Flexible expiry support. Each newsgroup can be configured to have a
  different expire period (in days), independent of other newsgroups.

• An active newsgroup list editor, which allows the user to control the flow
  of news in all active newsgroups.

• Runs as a background process under System 7. ToadNews will run in the
  background and quietly unbatch & expire news in the background.

• Support for System 7. Since ToadNews runs under System 7 only, it
  understands basic AppleEvents (Open Application, Open Document, and Quit
  Application), drag & drop files, balloon help, and aliases.

• Integrates well with UUPC and rnMac (which are almost required pieces of
  software for use with ToadNews). Support for other programs such as Gnuucp
  and TheNews are being worked on at this time.

• Cheap software. At the Shareware cost of $25, you get a useable, useful
  piece of UNIX/Macintosh interconnectivity. It's even cheaper than $25 if
  you choose to exercise the other purchasing options available.


Hardware Requirements:
----------------------

(1)     You will need at least a Macintosh Plus or higher machine running
    AT LEAST System 7.x.

(2) You will need a hard drive. The bigger the better.

(3) A modem is a must, since UUCP usually transports newbatches through
    serial lines.

(4) A UUCP newsfeed. A "newsfeed" is the machine that relays Usenet news to
    your machine via UUCP. Without it, this program is absolutely pointless.


Software Requirements:
----------------------

(1) A UUCP engine, I highly recommend Dave Platt's UUPC 3.0, available from
    any good FTP site or BBS. (such as sumex-aim.stanford.edu

    To use ToadNews you must have a UUCP engine up and running. ToadNews does
    not handle the transport of newsbatches from machine to machine. It is up
    to the UUCP engine to perform this job. If you don't have a UUCP engine,
    you can get a copy of Dave Platt's UUPC 3.0 from MOST good BBS's or well
    stocked FTP sites. You must have UUPC 3.0 running properly before you try
    to use ToadNews -- after all whats the point without any news to work on.

    You can also use Gnuucp for the macintosh The current version that is
    available is 4.3. You can get both UUCP engines from
    sumex-aim.stanford.edu via FTP. However, not much testing has been done
    using ToadNews and Gnuucp. It may take some fiddling to get things
    working OK.

(2) A Usenet newsreaders (or very flexible text-editor). One such newsreader
    is Roy Wood's "rnMac". Other newsreaders will support ToadNews, including
    Bill Cramer's "TheNews".

files with a Unix host while using MPW.

work over a gateway that dynamically assigns an IP address to the

This archive contains the binary distribution kit for version 3.0 of
uupc for the Macintosh.

uupc is a program which allows your Macintosh to communicate using the
"uucp" (Unix-to-Unix Copy Program) protocols, and to exchange files
and electronic mail with other uucp sites.  It is a major upgrade of
uupc 2.0 and 2.1, which were released to the Macintosh user community
several years ago. uupc 3.0 is MultiFinder-friendly, runs under System
6.0.x and under System 7, supports fast modems, is domain-aware, allows
for both outbound calls and for inbound (slave-mode) calls, has an
automatic call-scheduler, supports both the 'g' protocol (7-packet
window, packets up to 256 bytes) and the 'f' protocol (for use with
error-correcting modems or with X.25 links).

The Macintosh uupc 3.0 software release was coordinated by Dave Platt.
Code added in this release was written by a large number of
individuals, including Dave Platt, Gary Morris, Drew Derbyshire,
Sak Wathanasin, and probably others I've forgotten to mention
(apologies!).  The list of beta-testers is as long as my arm...
thank you, one and all, for pounding the tar out of this software
over the last few months.

uupc 3.0 is "freeware"... use it, give it away, pass it around, upload
it to your friendly neighborhood BBS.  Don't use it as the basis for a
commercial product... portions of it are copyright by their respective
authors.

uupc 3.0 is provided without any warranty whatsoever.  If you feed it
after midnight, and it gets nasty and shreds your living room furniture,
that's your problem, not mine ;-).  I'd like to hear about any problems
you may have with uupc 3.0, but I do not promise to fix them, or support
uupc 3.0 in any way.

Full source code to uupc 3.0 is being posted in a second archive... if
you don't like the way some aspect of uupc 3.0 works, you can customize
it to suit your own preferences!

a Mac Plus or a Mac SE.  It has been used most on Mac II's and the SE/30.


There is no documentation for Watch nor is it a supported product.  Use it at

Here's an updater that takes the communications program White Knight from
version 11.13 to 11.14. It requires the PUP decryptor version 2.000 which
shipped with White Knight 11.xx; it will NOT work with later versions of
the PUP decryptor program. Turn any virus protection programs OFF before
updating, work on a copy of WK 11.13, and make sure that copy is
uncompressed.

I downloaded this new updater from the White Knight (Freesoft) forum on
GEnie. Its brief description said only that the update fixes some printing
problems and some System 7 problems; no more information was provided. You
must have White Knight 11.13 to use this updater, of course.

communications program called Psycho! v1.0b1. Please archive this file

An excerpt from the submission's READ ME file follows, to explain what
Psycho! does (quite a bit), costs (a postcard), and requires to use.

This yet another attempt to submit the file. Due to problems attaching
the file to a mail message, I've decided to simply dump the program
into a mail message directly. More error prone than z-modem, but

INTRODUCTION ============

I think of Psycho! as a user configureable "front end" for White
Knight 11. Psycho! is designed to allow a user to configure the
Psycho! buttons to trigger up to six other White Knight procedures.
This way, a user can create a sort of psuedo-graphical user interface
for their favorite online services.

A user can assign one procedure each to the LOG ON! and Mail buttons
on the Psycho! main menu. (The Mail button is the telephone icon on
the main Psycho! screen.) The Special button gives the user access to
four additional procedures, of which one is selected as the default
Special procedure.

But wait! There's more! Psycho! is designed to improve upon White
Knight's phone book by storing "user information," including
passwords, login names and dialing information, for each of the six
procedures. This information is automatically passed on to the
executed procedure. As a result, you can easily change the information
(i.e., passwords) without rewriting and recompiling your procedures!

So give it a try. Psycho! is postcardware. You have nothing to lose,
and everything to gain.


INSTALLATION: =============

To decompress Psycho! properly, you need a BinHex decoding program,
such as DeHQX or Stuffit Expander, and either:

1/ ZipIt, or

2/ Any other .zip decompression program, such as UnZip, and a
MacBinary to Mac translation program, such as MacBinary II+,
MacBinary, Unfolder or the like.

Because Psycho! was compressed using ZipIt, option one is marginally
easier. ZipIt translates Mac files into MacBinary format for safe
compression using the .zip compression format, which is a PC-type
format. Why use ZipIt instead of Stuffit or Compact Pro? Simply, put,
I already own ZipIt, and I was astonished to discover that ZipIt
actually generated a smaller archive than Stuffit Lite! I find the
idea of a compression program that can be used on both Macs and PCs
quite appealing, so I decided to support the ZipIt format by using it.
Besides, freeware programs are readily available to decode Psycho!.
All of the programs mentioned above (except ZipIt) are free.

As I mentioned, installation will vary slightly depending on the
software you have.

Subject: NewQuickB.PROC for WhiteKnight (not really new) submission

This is not a really new QuickB.PROC RCMD module but this module is
really called NewQuickB.PROC. What happens is that White Knight didn't
support QuickB in its internal engine. Instead, QuickB is support
through White Knight's RCMD module, which is supposed to extend WK's
ability. Before WK 11.13 coming out, there were two such modules, the
original QuickB.PROC and this NewQuickB.PROC. released by WK's author
Scott Watson. The master disk for version after 11.13 comes with
another QuickB.PROC which runs miserably slow compared to this
NewQuickB.PROC. Is there any White Knight veteran willing to explain
this to a novice like me. (How about you, Al?) Anyway, if you use White
Knight and CI$, check this out when you fill impatient about the
download speed.

[To Eric: White Knight do support QuickB protocol in an quite indirect
 way but such module is included in each package of White Knight. Is
 it necessary to change table 3.1.1 in C.S.M.C. Faq? Another question is
 about table 3.1.2 in C.S.M.C Faq. White Knight supports terminal
 emulations TTY, VT52, VT100, VT102. I haven't finish the whole manual
 yet. However, it seems to me that WK doesn't support VT320 unless
 some RCMD module for VT320 does exist.]

1.33. Yes, I have both CompactPro and StuffIt Lite and I do register

     Who's There

     WHAT:
     This 'RDEV' was developed to use as an aid to finding / reporting
     network entities that use Name Binding Protocol (NBP).

     It allows selection of any NBP entity via the Chooser. It
     reports the NBP info and the network information (network,
     address,socket). I use it to look around.

     HOW:
     Put Who's There into your System Folder.  Get the Chooser DA.
     Select the Who's There icon.  Find an item in the list of devices
     and select it.  Click the mouse to close the window.

     A nice addition to this might be to do Echo's, but I haven't the time.

     The MPW source/makefile is included in this archive.

XferIt allows users to transfer files to and from TCP/IP hosts using FTP

This ResEdit color palette may speed up ZTerm's performance
at high speeds (>=9600 bps.) If you don't need color, simply
set your monitor to black and white. The following is from the
ReadMe file:

How it works:
   Changing the code resource makes ZTerm call _GetNewCWindow, instead of
_GetNewWindow.  When a program calls _GetNewCWindow, GetNewCWindow looks for a
resource of type pltt with the same id as the window.  It finds the palette
copied into ZTerm, and loads it.  When ZTerm tries to change the colors, the
palette manager uses the closest available colors, which should be the ones in
its palette (since there are only 16 colors).   When ZTerm is normally used in
16 color mode, the colors are very hard to read, because it has to use the
available colors.  It takes half as long to draw a character on the screen in
4-bit mode (16 colors) then it does to draw one in 8-bit (256 colors) mode.
Running in 16 colors should make ZTerm display the screen twice as fast (if
your modem is fast enough).

Zync is a file synchronization application designed for PowerBooks.

Its purpose is to copy files back and forth between your PowerBook and a desktop
computer.

Put Zync on either computer, then configure it by selecting a "remote" and
a "local" folder from the Setup item in the Zync menu.  In the Setup dialog
you asked to enter information regarding the "remote" volume.  Zync can
automatically mount and unmount the remote volume in order to do the file
synchronization, so setup need to be done only once.

To synchronize your files, select "Zync Now" from the Zync menu.  If the
remote volume is not present then Zync will mount it.  Once the remote and
local volumes are found, Zync looks at every file and folder in the local
and remote volumes from the point where the "Remote Path" and "Local Path"s
start, copy files and folders from one disk to the other so that both
folders contain the latest files and folders found on either disk from the
starting folder paths.

Zync can be distributed freely.  Enjoy.
